Joan Tate was born in Tonbridge, Kent, England in 1922. She attended a university in Sweden when war broke out and was unable to return to England until 1942. During that period she became proficient in Swedish and much of her professional work has been as a translator of important Swedish, Danish, and Norwegian authors, translating more than seventy books for children and sixty books for adults.
